Ingredients

  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped black olives
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry crushed oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups rolled bread or dough
  • 2 sliced tomatoes
  • 1 green pepper, cut in rings
  • 1/4 cup finely shredded cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the lean ground beef in a skillet.
  2. Drain excess fat from the beef.
  3. Add tomato paste, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped green onion, chopped black olives, dried crushed oregano, and salt to the beef.
  4. Simmer the mixture for 8 to 10 minutes.
  5. Prepare the dough as directed (roll into a 14 x 16-inch rectangle).
  6. Lightly oil a large baking sheet and place the dough on it.
  7. Place the meat filling lengthwise down the center of the dough.
  8. Cover only the center third of the dough with the filling.
  9. Cut into the dough every 2 inches on each side of the filling.
  10. Cross the strips diagonally over the filling to create a braided look.
  11. Tuck in the ends of the strips.
  12. Let the assembled dough rise for 5 to 10 minutes.
  13. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.
  14. Top with sliced tomatoes, green pepper rings, and sprinkle with shredded cheese.
  15. Bake for an additional 5 minutes until cheese melts and toppings are heated through.
