Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. plain unbleached flour
  • 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 4 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 to 2/3 c. milk
  • 1/4 stick melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450° to 500° F.
  2. Grease a baking pan.
  3. Combine the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Add milk slowly and mix to a smooth consistency.
  6. Knead the dough gently on a floured surface.
  7. Do not overknead.
  8. Press out the dough to a 1/2 to 1-inch thickness using your hand.
  9. Cut out biscuits with a biscuit cutter.
  10. Coat both sides of each biscuit with melted butter.
  11. Bake for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown.
