Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup dark syrup
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 cup chopped raisins or dates

Instructions

  1. Cream thoroughly the shortening and sugar.
  2. Beat in the egg, molasses, and dark syrup.
  3. Sift together the flour, salt, soda, and baking powder.
  4. Add the milk alternately with the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture.
  5. Stir in the chopped nuts and raisins or dates.
  6. Spread the batter in a greased shallow 8 x 12-inch pan.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 350°F (175°C).
  8. Cool the bars, then cut into individual pieces.
  9. Spread cooled bars with powdered sugar frosting.
