- Mix the remaining warm water, 1 tablespoon sugar, salt, and oil.
- Add the yeast mixture to the water mixture and stir.
- Gradually add 2 1/2 cups of flour and beat well.
- Let the batter rise in a warm place until bubbly, about 40 to 50 minutes.
- Add the diced ham to the batter.
- Work in the remaining flour, one cup at a time.
- Turn out onto a lightly floured surface.
- Knead for about 5 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl and grease the top.
- Let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk.
- Punch down the dough and turn onto a floured surface.
- Shape into two 9 x 5-inch loaves and place in greased loaf pans.
- Let rise until doubled in bulk.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 40 minutes.
- Brush the top with warm water or melted butter after baking.
