Savory Polish cabbage rolls with seasoned beef, rice, and tender cabbage leaves in a rich tomato sauce, perfect for comforting family dinners and traditional cuisine enthusiasts.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 2 c. quick rice
  • 1/2 c. onion, chopped
  • 1 head cabbage
  • 1 c. tomatoes or tomato sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine ground beef, quick rice, chopped onion, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  2. Steam the whole cabbage until leaves can be easily pulled off.
  3. Remove cabbage from steam and let cool slightly.
  4. Place small leaves in the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
  5. Place 1 to 3 tablespoons of the beef mixture on each leaf and roll up.
  6. Place the rolled cabbage leaves seam side down in the pan.
  7. Pour tomato sauce or tomatoes over the cabbage rolls. If using whole tomatoes, add 1/2 cup water.
  8. Cover the pan and bake at 350°F for 1 hour.
  9. Check periodically to prevent drying out and add water if necessary.
