Ingredients

  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Combine cold water, shortening, sugar, cloves, cinnamon, salt, and raisins in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Let the mixture stand until cooled.
  3. Add flour and baking soda to the cooled mixture and mix well.
  4. Pour into a greased and floured loaf pan.
  5. Bake in a 325°F oven for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Turn out the cake onto a cooling rack.
  7. Once cool, dust with confectioners' sugar, frost with cream cheese frosting, or serve plain.
