Ingredients

  • 4 qt. popcorn
  • 1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/2 c. light corn syrup
  • 1 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 3 to 4 Tbsp. flavored gelatin powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250°F.
  2. Place popcorn in a large 4-inch deep buttered baking pan and keep warm in the oven.
  3. Cut two large pieces of wax paper to fit on 2 cookie sheets and lightly butter the wax paper.
  4. In a larger saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, butter, salt, and cream of tartar.
  5. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, then cook until mixture reaches 250°F on a candy thermometer.
  6. Stir in flavored gelatin powder and continue cooking for about 1 minute until mixture reaches 260°F.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in baking soda quickly and thoroughly.
  8. Pour the hot syrup mixture over the popcorn while foamy, coating it evenly.
  9. Bake at 200°F for 1 hour, stirring 2 or 3 times during baking.
  10. Remove from oven and turn out onto wax paper.
  11. Allow to cool completely, then break into small pieces and store in tightly covered containers.
