Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1 small jar poppy seed filling

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk; cool 1/4 cup to lukewarm. Add yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar, and let stand in a warm place to rise for 30 minutes.
  2. To the remaining milk, add butter, sugar, and salt.
  3. Keep the mixture lukewarm.
  4. Add the egg yolk and beat well.
  5. Stir in the yeast mixture and half of the flour; beat well.
  6. Add the rest of the flour and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  7. Cover and let the dough rise until double in size.
  8. Roll out the dough and spread with poppy seed filling.
  9. Roll up the dough and let it rise until double in size.
  10. Bake at 325°F (160°C) for 20 minutes.
