Potato Halushkie are tender dumplings made from grated potatoes and onions, boiled to perfection, then topped with sautéed onions for a hearty, flavorful dish suitable for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 small onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 5 lb potatoes

Instructions

  1. Peel and grate the potatoes and onion.
  2. In a mixing bowl, add the grated potatoes and onion, then incorporate the milk, egg, salt, and pepper.
  3. Mix well until a dough forms.
  4. Cut off pieces of dough with a spoon and carefully drop them into boiling, slightly salted water.
  5. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes until the dumplings rise to the top of the water.
  6. Strain the cooked halushkie and pour cold water over them to stop the cooking process.
  7. Saute the diced onion until golden and fragrant, then pour over the halushkie before serving.
