Ingredients

  • 2 c. water
  • 2 c. raisins
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 2 Tbsp. lard
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda

Instructions

  1. Boil the water, raisins, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves together for 3 minutes; then cool.
  2. When cool, add the dry ingredients: flour and baking soda.
  3. Beat the mixture about 200 strokes until it is bubbly.
  4. Pour into a greased and floured loaf pan.
  5. Bake in a hot oven at 375° to 400°F for 1 hour.
  6. Reduce the oven temperature and continue baking for about 15 minutes, until the cake is done.
