Powder Puffs are light, sweet cookies with a tender crumb, perfect for tea time or special occasions. Their delicate flavor pairs well with coffee or tea.

Ingredients

  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. powdered sugar
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, cream of tartar, and baking soda in a bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, blend powdered sugar, shortening, egg, vanilla, and chopped nuts if using.
  3. Gradually blend the flour mixture into the sugar mixture until well combined.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a cookie sheet and press with a fork, resembling peanut butter cookies.
  5. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 5 to 7 minutes until set but not browned.
  6. Remove from oven and let cool.
  7. Dust with powdered sugar when cooled.
