Ingredients

  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/2 c. vinegar

Instructions

  1. Cook sugar, butter, salt, cream of tartar, and vinegar in a pan over medium heat until the hard crack stage, when a dropped string hardens and cracks in cold water.
  2. Pour the hot mixture into a buttered pan or onto several dinner plates and let it cool until it can be handled.
  3. Once cooled, take a handful of the honey-colored taffy and start pulling it into a string, then roping it back together with well-buttered hands.
  4. Continue pulling until the taffy turns whiter and becomes stiffer and harder to pull.
  5. When the taffy is sufficiently stiff and white, pull it into a long rope and lay it on waxed paper.
  6. Cut the rope into bite-sized pieces and wrap each piece in paper, twisting the ends to seal.
  7. Store the wrapped taffy in an airtight container.
