- Sift flour into a bowl or onto waxed paper; measure the flour.
- Add baking powder, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon; sift again to combine.
- Measure sugar, milk, and melted shortening into a small bowl of an electric mixer.
- Add the egg; beat about 1 minute at medium speed, or until well mixed.
- Add the flour mixture all at once; beat at low speed about 1 minute, or stir until well combined.
- Drop 5 spoonfuls of batter, approximately 1 teaspoon each, into hot fat at 365°F (185°C).
- Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, turning several times, until browned.
