Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon melted shortening
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Sift flour into a bowl or onto waxed paper; measure the flour.
  2. Add baking powder, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon; sift again to combine.
  3. Measure sugar, milk, and melted shortening into a small bowl of an electric mixer.
  4. Add the egg; beat about 1 minute at medium speed, or until well mixed.
  5. Add the flour mixture all at once; beat at low speed about 1 minute, or stir until well combined.
  6. Drop 5 spoonfuls of batter, approximately 1 teaspoon each, into hot fat at 365°F (185°C).
  7. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, turning several times, until browned.
