Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup butter

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix 1 1/2 cups flour with dry yeast.
  2. Heat water, milk, 3/4 cup butter, sugar, and salt until warm.
  3. Pour the warm mixture into the yeast mixture.
  4. Add an egg and beat on high speed of a mixer for three minutes.
  5. By hand, stir in 1 3/4 cups flour.
  6. Cover the dough and let rise for 30 minutes.
  7. While the dough is rising, combine topping ingredients.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, you can substitute half of the butter with unsweetened applesauce. If you need to speed up the rising process, place the dough in a warm oven (turned off) with a bowl of hot water. This recipe is quite forgiving, so if you don’t have dry yeast, you can use instant yeast in the same quantity.

Serving Suggestions

These Quick Stickie Buns are delicious on their own, but they pair beautifully with a cup of coffee or tea for breakfast or brunch. Consider serving them with fresh fruit or yogurt on the side for a balanced meal. They also make a fantastic treat alongside Daffodil Delight for a special occasion.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To reheat, wrap individual buns in a damp paper towel and microwave for about 15-20 seconds. For a crispier texture, place them in a preheated oven at 350°F for 5-10 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dough ahead of time and refrigerate it after the first rise. Just let it come to room temperature before shaping and baking. This can enhance the flavors and make your baking day easier.

What can I use for the topping?

You can get creative with the topping! A mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped nuts works well. Alternatively, for a fruity twist, consider adding dried cranberries or chopped apples to the topping mixture.

How do I know when the buns are done baking?

The buns are done when they are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom. An internal temperature of about 190°F indicates they are baked through. Keep an eye on them to avoid overbaking.
