Ingredients

  • 1 can (1 lb.) sliced beets
  • 1/2 cup Heinz vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 medium onion, sliced into rings (optional)

Instructions

  1. Drain beets, reserving 3/4 cup of liquid.
  2. Combine the beet liquid, vinegar, sugar, ground ginger, ground allspice, and salt in a saucepan.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then pour it over the beets.
  4. Refrigerate the beets in a covered bowl overnight.
  5. Add sliced onion just before serving, if desired.
