Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg white
  • 3/4 cup chopped nuts
  • raspberry jelly

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening until smooth.
  2. Add vanilla, brown sugar, and egg yolk; blend well.
  3. Mix in flour and salt until combined.
  4. Shape the dough into small balls.
  5. Dip each ball into whipped egg white, then roll in chopped nuts.
  6. Place the coated dough balls on a cookie sheet, 1 inch apart.
  7. Press your thumb into the center of each cookie to create a well.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10 to 15 minutes until lightly golden.
  9. Allow cookies to cool, then fill the thumbprints with raspberry jelly.
