Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 slightly beaten egg
  • 3 (1 oz) unsweetened chocolate squares
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine 2/3 cup sugar, 1/2 cup milk, a slightly beaten egg, and chocolate.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the chocolate melts and the mixture comes just to boiling.
  3. Cool to room temperature.
  4. Stir shortening to soften.
  5. Gradually add 1 cup sugar, creaming together until light and fluffy.
  6. Add vanilla.
  7. Add remaining eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  8. Sift together the dry ingredients: 2 cups sifted cake flour and 1 teaspoon soda.
  9. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with 1 cup milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients, beating after each addition.
  10. Blend in the cooled chocolate mixture.
  11. Pour batter into two paper-lined round pans.
  12. Bake in a 350°F oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until done.
  13. Cool for 10 minutes, then remove from pans.
  14. Frost and fill cooled layers with chocolate frosting.
  15. Trim with curls of shaved unsweetened chocolate.
