Ingredients

  • 8 cups cabbage, shredded
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 3/4 cup salad oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Alternate layers of shredded cabbage, chopped onion, and sugar in a large bowl.
  2. Combine vinegar, salad oil, mustard, celery seed, and salt; bring to a boil.
  3. Simmer until well blended.
  4. Pour the boiling liquid over the layered cabbage mixture.
  5. Cover and let set for about 3 hours.
  6. Stir the mixture well.
  7. Let it set for another 2 or 3 hours.
  8. Refrigerate and serve within 5 to 6 weeks.
