Ingredients

  • 6 cups sugar
  • 1/2 pound margarine
  • 2 cups dark corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 14 ounces evaporated milk
  • 3 cups chopped nuts or coconut

Instructions

  1. Cook sugar, margarine, dark corn syrup, and evaporated milk together over low heat for 30 minutes.
  2. Stir the mixture well.
  3. Add chopped nuts or coconut and cook on high heat until a few drops form a soft ball when tested (230° to 240° on a candy thermometer).
  4. Stir constantly during this stage.
  5. Add vanilla, then cool to lukewarm and beat hard until the mixture loses its gloss and starts to hold shape.
  6. Pour into a large buttered pan or spoon into small mounds on wax paper.
  7. Store in an airtight container.
