Ingredients

  • 4 slices bacon or 3 Tbsp. oil
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 1 large head red cabbage, finely chopped
  • 1 tart apple, sliced with peel
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • 1 tsp. caraway seed
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. Brown the sliced onions in drippings or oil.
  2. Add the chopped red cabbage, sliced apple, salt, pepper, and caraway seed to the onions.
  3. Mix the beef bouillon cube, cider vinegar, lemon juice, brown sugar, and sugar together.
  4. Add the mixture to the cabbage and cook for about 15 minutes.
  5. Dissolve cornstarch in a little water, then stir into the cabbage.
  6. Simmer just enough for the cornstarch to thicken the dish.
