- Butter a cookie sheet.
- Heat milk and melted shortening to the temperature of a warm baby bottle.
- Mix flour, salt, and sugar in a separate bowl.
- Add warm water to the yeast in a small bowl.
- Beat the egg in a separate bowl.
- Add the warm milk and melted shortening to the bowl of flour, salt, and sugar.
- Add the egg, yeast mixture, and water to the bowl.
- Beat the entire mixture until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl, which should be clean.
- Cover the bowl with a cloth and let the dough rise in a warm, non-air-conditioned place until doubled in size, about 1.5 hours.
- Knead the dough down and shape into a round loaf.
- Place the loaf on the prepared cookie sheet and let it rise again until about half again as big, approximately 45 minutes.
- Bake the bread at 300°F (150°C) for approximately 45 minutes.
