Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 oz active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup melted shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup plus milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tablespoons warm water

Instructions

  1. Butter a cookie sheet.
  2. Heat milk and melted shortening to the temperature of a warm baby bottle.
  3. Mix flour, salt, and sugar in a separate bowl.
  4. Add warm water to the yeast in a small bowl.
  5. Beat the egg in a separate bowl.
  6. Add the warm milk and melted shortening to the bowl of flour, salt, and sugar.
  7. Add the egg, yeast mixture, and water to the bowl.
  8. Beat the entire mixture until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl, which should be clean.
  9. Cover the bowl with a cloth and let the dough rise in a warm, non-air-conditioned place until doubled in size, about 1.5 hours.
  10. Knead the dough down and shape into a round loaf.
  11. Place the loaf on the prepared cookie sheet and let it rise again until about half again as big, approximately 45 minutes.
  12. Bake the bread at 300°F (150°C) for approximately 45 minutes.
  13. Baste the top of the bread with butter after 30 minutes of baking, and again immediately after removing from the oven.
