Ingredients

  • 1 small head cabbage (1 1/2 lb.)
  • 5 Tbsp. butter, softened
  • 3 Tbsp. flour
  • 2 c. milk
  • 1/4 c. ham, diced
  • 4 slices bacon, crisply cooked and crumbled
  • 1/4 c. green pepper
  • 1 c. saltine crackers, crumbled

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Wash and core the cabbage, then cut into 1/2-inch slices.
  3. Steam the cabbage for 5 to 7 minutes until tender, then drain and place into a casserole dish.
  4. Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add flour, and stir for 2 minutes.
  5. Gradually add milk, blending with a whisk, and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the sauce is smooth and thickened.
  6. Remove the sauce from heat. Mix in diced ham, crumbled bacon, remaining butter, and chopped green pepper.
  7. Spread the mixture evenly over the cabbage in the casserole dish.
  8. Sprinkle crumbled saltine crackers over the top and pour the white sauce evenly.
  9. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes until light brown and bubbly.
