Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups self-rising flour
  • 4 tablespoons Crisco
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 475°F (246°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine self-rising flour, soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut in the Crisco until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Gradually add buttermilk, stirring gently until just combined.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly.
  6. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick layer and cut into biscuits.
  7. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.
  8. Melt 1/2 stick of butter and brush it on the hot biscuits before serving.
