Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk and add salt, butter, honey or maple syrup, and 3/4 cup of warm water. Stir well.
  2. Let the mixture cool to lukewarm.
  3. In the remaining 1/4 cup of warm water, dissolve the yeast.
  4. Add the dissolved yeast to the cooled milk mixture.
  5. Gradually add the sifted flour and knead into a smooth dough.
  6. Place the dough in a buttered bowl and brush the top with soft butter.
  7. Let rise until doubled in size.
  8. Knead the dough lightly and shape into a loaf in a buttered pan.
  9. Brush the top with soft butter again and let rise until doubled in size.
  10. Bake at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes.
