Ingredients

  • 1 c. all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 4 Tbsp. cocoa, divided
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp. melted shortening
  • 3/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. hot water
  • whipped topping

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, 2 tablespoons cocoa, and salt in a bowl.
  2. Stir in milk, vanilla, and melted shortening until smooth.
  3. Pour the batter into a greased 8-inch baking pan.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and remaining cocoa.
  5. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the pan.
  6. Pour hot water over the top of the batter and cocoa mixture.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes until set.
  8. Serve warm, topped with whipped topping.
