Ingredients

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 3/4 c. buttermilk
  • 1 Tbsp. butter or margarine

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  2. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in the buttermilk all at once, just until the dough clings together.
  4. Knead lightly on a floured surface a few times.
  5. Roll out the dough to 1/2 inch thickness.
  6. Cut with a 2 1/2 inch round cutter.
  7. Place the cut biscuits about 1 inch apart on a cookie sheet.
  8. Braise with butter.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 450°F for 12 to 14 minutes or until golden brown.
