Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 cup lard
  • 1 heaping teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cold water

Instructions

  1. Beat together sugar, molasses, eggs, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice, and lard until well combined.
  2. Add baking soda to cold water and then add to the batter.
  3. Mix in baking powder and gradually add flour, mixing until dough is smooth.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a greased cookie sheet and flatten each with a fork dipped in water.
  5. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10 to 12 minutes until cookies are done.
