Sourdough Bread From Herman
A hearty, flavorful sourdough bread with a subtle tang, soft crumb, and crusty exterior, perfect for homemade sandwiches or enjoyed on its own with butter.

Instructions
- Combine milk, 1 cup water, and cooking oil; bring to a boil, then cool to lukewarm.
- Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water; add sugar and salt, then mix into cooled milk mixture.
- Put flour in a large bowl; hollow out the center and pour the milk mixture into it.
- Add Herman starter and stir; do not knead.
- Put dough in a greased pan or bowl; cover and let rise until doubled in size.
- Divide the dough into 2 loaves.
- Shape each into desired form and place in greased baking pans.
- Let rise, uncovered, in a warm place until doubled in size.
- Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then 15 to 20 minutes at 350°F until golden brown.
