A hearty, flavorful sourdough bread with a subtle tang, soft crumb, and crusty exterior, perfect for homemade sandwiches or enjoyed on its own with butter.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Herman
  • 1 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 c water
  • 1/2 c milk
  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1/4 c warm water
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp salt

Instructions

  1. Combine milk, 1 cup water, and cooking oil; bring to a boil, then cool to lukewarm.
  2. Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water; add sugar and salt, then mix into cooled milk mixture.
  3. Put flour in a large bowl; hollow out the center and pour the milk mixture into it.
  4. Add Herman starter and stir; do not knead.
  5. Put dough in a greased pan or bowl; cover and let rise until doubled in size.
  6. Divide the dough into 2 loaves.
  7. Shape each into desired form and place in greased baking pans.
  8. Let rise, uncovered, in a warm place until doubled in size.
  9. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then 15 to 20 minutes at 350°F until golden brown.
