- Mix sugar and shortening together in a bowl.
- Add the egg and molasses, and blend well.
- Sift together the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and ground cloves.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until the dough is stiff.
- Take a walnut-sized piece of dough, roll into a ball, and then roll in granulated sugar.
- Place the coated dough balls on an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10 to 12 minutes.
