Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar and shortening together in a bowl.
  2. Add the egg and molasses, and blend well.
  3. Sift together the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and ground cloves.
  4. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until the dough is stiff.
  5. Take a walnut-sized piece of dough, roll into a ball, and then roll in granulated sugar.
  6. Place the coated dough balls on an ungreased baking sheet.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10 to 12 minutes.
