Ingredients

  • 4 cups sliced fresh berries
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon butter or oleo, melted
  • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Combine sliced berries and sugar, stirring gently.
  2. Chill for 1 to 2 hours.
  3. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  5. Gradually add enough milk to form a soft dough, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened.
  6. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead 4 or 5 times.
  7. Roll the dough into an 11 x 8-inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
