Sweet Bowknots are charming, lightly fried Italian treats with a delicate sweetness and subtle orange and almond flavors, perfect for sharing at celebrations or with coffee.

Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 3 Tbsp. granulated sugar
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. orange flavor
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 tsp. almond extract
  • 1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
  • 3 c. peanut oil or salad oil

Instructions

  1. Beat eggs lightly, then add granulated sugar, salt, and orange flavor; blend thoroughly.
  2. Place flour on a board; cut in butter and add the egg mixture.
  3. Knead until a smooth dough is obtained.
  4. If the dough is too soft, gradually add a little flour to make it firm but not hard.
  5. Set aside the dough for 30 minutes.
  6. Divide the dough into 4 sections.
  7. Roll each section on a well-floured board until wafer thin.
  8. Cut into strips 6 inches long and 3/4 inch wide with a pastry cutter.
  9. Tie each strip into a bowknot or make a slit in the center and invert.
  10. Fry the bowknots in hot oil for about 3 minutes until lightly browned.
  11. Drain on absorbent paper, then cool.
  12. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
