  • cumin powder
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 28 oz. can tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Tips & Substitutions

For a smoother chutney, blend the ingredients in batches if your blender is small. If you prefer a milder flavor, reduce the amount of hot pepper or use a milder variety. You can substitute the sugar with honey or maple syrup for a different sweetness profile. If you have fresh tomatoes, you can use them instead of canned; just ensure to cook them down until they break apart.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this Sweet Tomato Chutney as a condiment alongside grilled meats or roasted vegetables. It pairs beautifully with Christmas Cranberries for a festive spread. Additionally, try it as a topping for sandwiches or burgers, or alongside crackers and cheese for a delightful appetizer.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover chutney in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. To reheat, simply warm it gently on the stovetop over low heat, stirring occasionally. If it becomes too thick, add a splash of water or vinegar to reach your desired consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this chutney ahead of time?

Absolutely! This chutney can be made several days in advance, allowing the flavors to meld together. Just be sure to store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It’s a great way to prepare for gatherings, as it can be served cold or warmed up.

What can I substitute for vinegar?

If you want a different acidity, you can use lemon juice or apple cider vinegar as a substitute for regular vinegar. Both options will add a unique flavor profile to the chutney while still maintaining the necessary acidity.

How can I adjust the sweetness of the chutney?

To adjust the sweetness, feel free to add more or less sugar according to your taste preference. If you want a less sweet chutney, start with half the amount of sugar and gradually add more until you achieve your desired flavor.
