Ingredients

  • 1/3 of an 8 oz. jar Tarama
  • 1 small Onion
  • 1-2 cups Olive oil
  • 4-5 slices White bread

Instructions

  1. Mash the Tarama and add the grated onion. Add a little of the olive oil and beat thoroughly to a smooth paste.
  2. Moisten the bread and squeeze out the excess water.
  3. Continue beating the Tarama mixture, adding alternately small bits of moistened bread, olive oil, and lemon juice.
  4. Beat until the mixture is cream colored. Serve as a dip with crackers or spread on toast.

Tips & Substitutions

For a creamier texture, consider using a food processor to blend the ingredients more thoroughly. If you don’t have Tarama, smoked salmon or tuna can be used as substitutes, but the flavor will differ. To enhance the dish, add a pinch of smoked paprika or fresh herbs like dill. Adjust the amount of olive oil based on your desired thickness; a little goes a long way.

Serving Suggestions

Taramasalata is traditionally served as a dip with warm pita or crispy crackers. It also makes a delightful spread on toast, perfect for brunch or as an appetizer. Pair it with fresh vegetable sticks or olives for a Mediterranean-inspired platter. It complements well with rosemary potatoes or alongside marinated swordfish for a complete meal.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To maintain freshness, it's best to consume it soon after preparation. If the dip thickens in the fridge, simply stir in a little olive oil or water to reach your desired consistency before serving again.
