- Bring 5 cups of water to a boil in a large pot.
- Add 1 cup of grits while stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
- Lower heat to medium once the water turns white with the grits cooking.
- Take the pot off the heat and slowly add the well-beaten egg, stirring constantly to blend.
- Add 1 cup of grated cheese to the mixture and stir until melted.
- Grease a 9 x 10-inch dish with butter.
- Pour the hot grits mixture into the prepared dish.
- Cook in an oven preheated to 375°F (190°C) until the center is firm, about 30-40 minutes.
