Ingredients

  • 5 cups water
  • 1 cup grits
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1 clove garlic
  • salt to taste
  • butter to grease 9 x 10-inch dish
  • 1 cup cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Bring 5 cups of water to a boil in a large pot.
  2. Add 1 cup of grits while stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  3. Lower heat to medium once the water turns white with the grits cooking.
  4. Take the pot off the heat and slowly add the well-beaten egg, stirring constantly to blend.
  5. Add 1 cup of grated cheese to the mixture and stir until melted.
  6. Grease a 9 x 10-inch dish with butter.
  7. Pour the hot grits mixture into the prepared dish.
  8. Cook in an oven preheated to 375°F (190°C) until the center is firm, about 30-40 minutes.
