Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 3 teaspoons ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening; add sugar, molasses, egg, and vinegar.
  2. Mix well.
  3. Combine flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon, and add to molasses mixture.
  4. Shape dough into a ball and knead until smooth.
  5. Chill overnight.
  6. Divide dough.
  7. Roll to 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface.
  8. Cut with a 4-inch gingerbread cutter and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
  9. Bake at 375°F for 7 minutes.
