Ingredients

  • 2 cups presifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup tomato juice
  • 3 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 cup grated Cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, soda, and salt.
  2. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  3. Add the tomato juice and mix only until the dry ingredients are moistened.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured board.
  5. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness into a rectangle.
  6. Spread the dough with softened butter.
  7. Sprinkle with grated Cheddar cheese and paprika.
  8. Roll up the dough like a jelly roll starting from the longer side.
  9. Cut into 1/2-inch slices.
  10. Place the slices cut side down on a greased baking sheet.
  11. Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F for 20 minutes.
