Very Large Banana Pudding

Ingredients

  • 1 large box vanilla wafers
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • dash salt
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 5 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 stick oleo
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 or 5 bananas

Instructions

  1. Mix thoroughly sugar, flour, and salt in a saucepan.
  2. Add egg yolks and a little of the milk; mix well to form a pastry-like base.
  3. Stir in the remaining milk and add margarine.
  4. Cook on medium heat until thickened, then remove from heat.
  5. Add vanilla and stir to combine; let it cool.
  6. In a large deep casserole dish, place a layer of vanilla wafers on the bottom.
  7. Slice bananas over the wafers.
  8. Pour a layer of the cooled pudding mixture over the bananas.
  9. Repeat layers of wafers, bananas, and pudding until all ingredients are used.
  10. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  11. Gradually add 3 tablespoons of sugar and continue beating until stiff.
  12. Top the banana pudding with the meringue.
  13. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until the meringue is golden brown.
