Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 lb. lean ground beef
  • 2 large onions, chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped green pepper (optional)
  • 1 cup V-8 vegetable juice or tomato juice
  • 2/3 cup catsup
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. In a large frying pan or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef and chopped onions over medium heat until the meat is browned and the vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes.
  2. Stir in the V-8 vegetable juice or tomato juice, catsup, sugar, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce, then simmer uncovered over low heat for 2 hours.
  3. Remove the lid during the last 30 minutes of cooking if the sauce appears too thin.
  4. The mixture will resemble spaghetti sauce and can be stored well and frozen.
  5. Serve on cocktail rolls as an hors d'oeuvre or piled on hamburger buns for lunch.
