Ingredients

  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Put the corn syrup, cold water, salt, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil and cook for 3 minutes.
  3. Add the shortening to the mixture and cool.
  4. Dissolve the baking soda in a small amount of hot water and add to the cooled mixture.
  5. Add the flour and baking powder, then stir until well blended.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased tube pan.
  7. Bake at 325°F (163°C) for 1 hour.
