Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • shortening
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 5 or 6 cups sifted flour

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk, then let it cool.
  2. Soften the yeast in warm water; let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, combine sugar, shortening, and salt.
  4. Immediately pour the scalded milk over the ingredients in the bowl and stir until the shortening is melted.
  5. When the mixture is lukewarm, blend in 1 cup of sifted flour.
  6. Stir in the softened yeast and mix well.
  7. Measure 5 or 6 cups of sifted flour.
  8. Add about half of the flour to the yeast mixture and beat until very smooth.
  9. Beat in eggs, then grease the dough and let it rise.
  10. Bake in a 350°F oven for 45 minutes.
