Ingredients

  • 2 boxes chocolate cake mix
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 14 oz pkg caramel candies
  • 1 1/2 cups margarine or butter, softened
  • 12 oz pkg chocolate chips
  • 1 cup pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Grease and flour a 13 x 9 inch pan or line with foil for thicker brownies.
  2. Combine 1/3 cup evaporated milk with the caramels in a small saucepan, heat over low to medium heat, stirring constantly until smooth, then keep warm on low heat.
  3. Mix dry cake mix with 2/3 cup evaporated milk and nuts, stirring until dough holds together.
  4. Press half of the dough into the prepared pan as the bottom layer.
  5. Bake at 350°F for 6 minutes.
  6. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over the top.
  7. Pour caramel mixture over the chocolate chips.
  8. Spread remaining cake mixture over the caramel layer.
  9. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  10. Allow to cool completely before slicing into pieces.
