Ingredients

  • 2 c. millet flour
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar
  • ground hot red pepper
  • grated ginger root
  • 1 gal. water

Instructions

  1. Mix millet flour, sugar, vinegar, ground hot red red pepper, grated ginger root, and water in a large container.
  2. Pour the mixture through cheesecloth to strain out solids.
  3. Stir the strained liquid again before serving in a gourd.
  4. Optionally, add a few flies, gnats, or mosquitoes for realism.

Tips & Substitutions

For a spicier kick, adjust the amount of ground hot red pepper to your taste. You can substitute millet flour with sorghum flour for a gluten-free option. If you prefer a tangier flavor, try adding a splash of Cranberry Vinegar instead of regular vinegar. Stir the mixture well to ensure all ingredients are properly combined before straining.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Zoom Koom in traditional gourds for an authentic experience, and consider pairing it with spicy snacks or savory dishes like Cooked Cucumbers. For an unusual twist, you could also serve it alongside Vegan recipes to create a unique dining experience. Garnish with fresh ginger or a sprinkle of hot pepper for added flair.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. When ready to serve, give the mixture a good stir to recombine any settled ingredients. If it thickens, you can add a little water to achieve your desired consistency before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other types of flour for this recipe?

Yes, you can experiment with other flours such as teff or quinoa flour. However, keep in mind that the flavor and texture may vary slightly. Millet flour is preferred for its unique taste and consistency, but feel free to adapt based on what you have on hand.

How can I make this drink less sweet?

To reduce the sweetness, simply decrease the amount of sugar used in the recipe. Start with half the amount and adjust to your taste. You can also balance the sweetness with more vinegar or additional spices, such as extra grated ginger.

Is it safe to add insects to the drink?

While the suggestion to add flies, gnats, or mosquitoes is meant for realism, it's not necessary for safety or flavor. If you're concerned about cleanliness, it's best to skip this step and enjoy the drink without any additions.
