Ingredients

  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 box powdered sugar
  • 1 lb. butter
  • 3/4 lb. shortening
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 8 1/2 c. flour

Instructions

  1. Blend sugar, powdered sugar, butter, and shortening until light and creamy.
  2. Stir together the dry ingredients: flour, salt, cream of tartar, and baking soda.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture and mix well until blended.
  4. Form the dough into balls.
  5. Flatten with a glass dipped in sugar or drop by spoon and mash with a fork dipped in water.
  6. This recipe may be cut down to one half.
