Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cream together the shortening, butter, sugar, and brown sugar.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla; beat well.
  3. Gradually stir in the flour, soda, cream of tartar, and salt until well combined.
  4. If desired, fold in chopped walnuts.
  5. Roll the dough into walnut-sized balls.
  6. Dip the top of each ball in sugar.
  7. Place the cookies on a cookie sheet, sugar side up.
  8. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 8 minutes or until lightly golden.
