Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 pound butter
  • 3 teaspoons anise extract
  • 1/4 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Toss lightly to mix.
  3. Add eggs and sugar, and mix well until combined.
  4. The mixture will be crumbly.
  5. Add melted butter, anise extract, and warm water.
  6. Stir until the mixture forms a ball.
  7. Knead the dough for 5 minutes until smooth.
  8. Wrap and refrigerate the dough for 1 hour.
  9. Pinch off pieces of dough about the size of walnuts and roll into logs.
  10. Tie each piece into a knot, shape as desired, and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet.
  11. Bake at 350°F (177°C) for about 25 minutes until slightly brown.
