Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 lemon (rind and juice)
  • vanilla, sugar or extract
  • 6 to 8 apples, grated
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten

Instructions

  1. Make dough from flour, egg, butter or margarine, sugar, baking powder, lemon rind and juice, and vanilla or extract.
  2. Grate 6 to 8 apples.
  3. Add sugar to taste and mix with the grated apples.
  4. Roll out the cold dough.
  5. Place half of the dough in a greased pan and prick the bottom with a fork.
  6. Spread the grated apples evenly over the dough in the pan.
  7. Cover with the remaining dough and seal the edges like a pie.
  8. Prick the top crust with a fork.
  9. Brush the top with beaten egg yolk.
  10. Bake for 35 minutes or until the crust is light brown.
