Ingredients

  • 2 packets yeast
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 1/4 cups warm milk
  • 1/4 cup butter (soft)
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Orange rind from 1 orange
  • 2 medium grated apples
  • 1 cup ground walnuts
  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 4 cups white flour

Instructions

  1. Mix yeast, sugar, and warm water; proof for 5 minutes.
  2. Add warm milk, butter, cinnamon, baking soda, orange rind, grated apples, and ground walnuts; stir to combine.
  3. Add whole-wheat flour and white flour; knead the dough for 10 minutes.
  4. Let the dough rise until it doubles in size.
  5. Divide the dough into two portions.
  6. Roll each portion into a rectangle.
  7. Soak raisins in Grand Marnier and spread 1/2 cup over the dough rectangles.
  8. Roll up the dough into loaves and place in bread pans.
  9. Let the loaves rise until doubled in size.
  10. Bake at 425°F for 10 minutes, then reduce temperature to 350°F and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes.
  11. Remove from oven, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and let cool before serving.
