Ingredients

  • 6 medium cooking apples
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 2/3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup orange marmalade
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Butter a shallow baking dish approximately 13 x 9 x 2 inches.
  3. Peel and core the apples, then slice them very thin.
  4. Arrange the apple slices in the prepared baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle the sliced apples with brown sugar evenly.
  6. Place the dish in the hot oven while preparing the topping.
  7. In a mixing bowl, combine sifted all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cinnamon.
  8. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  9. Add the egg, orange marmalade, and milk; mix until smooth.
  10. Pour the batter over the apples in the baking dish.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until golden and cooked through.
