Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • milk
  • 3 cups apples
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 stick butter
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 1/4 cups white sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions

  1. Bring water, sugar, and butter to a boil in a saucepan.
  2. Pour the boiling mixture over the dough mixture.
  3. Bake in a 350°F oven until golden brown, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  4. If the dish becomes too dry, boil more water with a little sugar and butter, then pour over and let cook a little longer.
  5. Keep checking during baking to ensure it doesn't get too dry.
  6. Pour the mixture over the dough anytime during baking as desired.
