Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 1/2 cups applesauce
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Sift together flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice.
  2. Add applesauce, eggs, and shortening to the dry ingredients.
  3. Using a mixer at low speed, beat just until moistened.
  4. Increase speed to medium and beat for 3 minutes.
  5. Spread the batter in a greased 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1-inch jelly roll pan.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool before cutting into bars.
